SAMPLE OF INTRODUCTION

The Marine Corps Martial Art takes the three disciplines of the body, mind, and spirit and blends them into a complete system. A belt ranking system that mirrors the process by which we transform civilians into Marines, and then develop Marines into leaders is the structure of this system. The following is a breakdown of the belt system.

Black Belt (1st degree).

a. Physical Discipline. Bayonet Techniques, Sweeping Hip Throw, Face Rip from Guard, Neck Manipulation Takedown, Rolling Knee-bar, Triangle Choke from the Guard Position, Straight Arm Bar from a Scarf Hold, Bent Arm Bar from a Scarf Hold, Counter Pistol to the Head, Striking Techniques, Knife vs Handheld Weapon, Free Sparing, Review (Black Belt Discipline), Sustainment (Previous Rank) 28.0 = 62.5 hours.

b. Mental Discipline - Leadership Training Techniques. Read a book on the Zulu (TBD) and Vice and Virtue in Everyday Life and prepare a written presentation on each.

c. Character Discipline. Martial Culture Study (Zulu), Participate in Mentoring Program, Discussion Leader Core Values Training.

d. Prerequisites. Must be sergeant or above (Rank Waiverable 1 Grade with approval of the Director of the MACE), Recommendation of Commanding Officer, Appropriate Level PME.

2nd Degree thru 6th Degree Black Belt – Being Developed.

Testing. Advancement in the belt ranking system includes meeting the mental and character discipline requirements, and the prerequisites for each belt level. In addition each Marine will be required to show that he has maintained proficiency in the physical disciplines of his current belt as well as pass for the physical disciplines of the next belt level.

Summary. As can be seen, the break down of the physical, mental, and character disciplines as well as prerequisites for each belt level build upon the basic skills. This graduated approach as well as the blending of the three disciplines produces a synergy and ensures the whole of the Martial Arts program is greater than the sum of its parts.
